The goldfield at Charters Towers covers a large area and therefore is being developed through accessing the ore bodies in several areas and interconnecting the mines where possible. There is a common management and equipment infrastructure that is available to the mines. The next commercial gold production area is the Central mine. Geography. Black Jack is a triangular-shaped locality. The Great Northern railway line forms the northern boundary of Black Jack. There are two railway stations within the locality, Wellington Yards railway station in the far north-east corner (on the outskirts of the suburban area of Charters Towers) and Southern Cross railway station on its north-west border. It i's situated 6½ miles from Charters Towers on the Clermont Highway. First discovered and worked in 1875. Worked intermittently until 1886 when rich stone was obtained in the Black Jack P.C. Mine it boomed for three years Then the area was worked intermittently until 1912.
